How to Clean and Maintain Artificial Grass in Surrey's Wet Climate

6 min read

One of the best things about artificial grass is how little it asks of you. No mowing, no watering, no fertilizing. But low-maintenance isn't no-maintenance, and a few easy habits keep your synthetic turf looking new for years. Here's exactly how to clean and care for fake grass in Surrey's wet climate.

The basic routine

For a normal lawn, upkeep is genuinely simple. Rinse it with a hose now and then to clear dust and pollen. Brush the blades upright a couple of times a year, especially on high-traffic paths, so they don't lie flat. Pick up leaves and debris before they pack down. That's the whole routine for most Surrey yards.

Brushing: the one job that matters most

Synthetic blades stand up on their own, but foot traffic and weight flatten them over time. A stiff push broom or a power brush stands them back up and keeps the lawn looking full. Brush against the grain. In our experience this single habit does more for a turf lawn's appearance than anything else.

Dealing with leaves and moss

Surrey's big cedars and firs drop a lot of needles and leaves. Clear them with a leaf blower or a plastic rake so they don't decompose into the infill. Here's the good news on moss: it needs soil to root, and turf sits on a clean gravel base, so the moss that takes over real lawns has nowhere to grow. A rinse clears any surface film.

Pet areas need a little more

If you have dogs, rinse the pet area regularly and pick up solids as you would on grass. Every so often, an enzyme cleaner breaks down anything the rinse misses and keeps it fresh. A properly draining pet install does most of the work, but the enzyme rinse is the finishing touch for odour control.

What not to do

  • Don't use a pressure washer on full blast up close. It can displace infill. A normal hose or a gentle wide spray is plenty.
  • Don't put a BBQ or fire pit directly on the turf. High heat can melt the blades. Use a pad or pavers underneath.
  • Don't ignore flat, matted areas for years. The longer blades stay crushed, the harder they are to revive.

When to call in a pro

Sometimes a tired lawn needs more than a brush. If the blades are matted across the whole yard, the infill has settled, a pet area has started to smell, or seams and edges are lifting, that's a job for a deep clean and service. We see this a lot on older installs in established areas like North Delta. Our artificial turf cleaning and repair service power-brushes, sanitizes, tops up infill, and fixes seams to bring a flat lawn back to life. If yours has seen better days, give us a call and we'll take a look.
